Every spring, herds of sheep set out for fresh pastures in the rolling hills of northern Italy. For adult sheep, the trek can take up to 20 days. But baby lambs aren’t strong enough to walk that far. So they hitch a ride—on a donkey!

Known as “donkey nannies,” these animals wear special saddles with pouches where young lambs can rest safely. One type of saddle has pockets for up to six lambs! As shepherds guide the flocks across the rocky mountains, the donkeys carry their passengers with care. This centuries-old practice remains an important part of Italy’s farming tradition.
