How do you turn a gourd into a glowing masterpiece? Artists cut out large shapes with saws and chisels, then scoop out the slimy pulp and seeds inside. They use smaller tools to carve finer details.
“Since it will rot no matter what you do, you don’t have to worry about mistakes,” says pumpkin carver Sue Beatrice.
