Columbian mammoth tusks could grow as long as 16 feet!

Archaeologists have discovered dozens of mammoth skeletons near Mexico City. And there may be hundreds more! The latest bones were found beneath an airport construction site.

More than 30,000 years ago, the area included the shores of an ancient lake. Grasses and reeds grew from the muddy, shallow water. Researchers believe the mammoths waded in to eat. Then the heavy animals got stuck in the muck! They may even have been hunted by early humans while they were trapped.
