Sometimes tragedy can strike baby moose. They can be orphaned if their mothers are struck by cars. Fortunately, near Anchorage, Alaska, a group of women called Alaska Moose Mamas is ready to help.

From May to September, Moose Mamas rescue calves and raise them. First, they offer milk in bottles, then leaves and branches as the calves get older. Finally, they release the grown moose into the wild.

“What’s pretty cool is seeing a formerly 25-pound baby now a mom of her own calf,” says Dana DeBernardi, the group’s founder.
