Boiling water filled with toxic chemicals stretches across the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. These pools form when rocky slabs of Earth’s crust, or outer layer, slowly pull apart, releasing dangerously hot water and gases. The ridges of color surrounding the pools are layers of minerals and salt left behind as the pools dry in the heat. It’s an alien environment right here on Earth!

Temperatures at the Danakil Depression can reach 127 degreesF!

Compare and contrast these toxic pools to a pond or lake in your area.
